Bio:

Chatenay-Malabry (la vallée aux loups, near Paris) born, Philly raised, Chicago based artist Chloé Beltran makes their artwork through the process of reevaluating personal experiences. Chloé investigates the connection of different memories and how they are remembered. Whether it is remembered within the body or becomes a consistent thought, guiding each encounter with the world around them. Their work considers the questions, “How do our memories shape our being? How do we access them?” Chloé studied psychology after high school and moved to Chicago, completing their BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in May 2017.

Chloé previously worked with oils and charcoal on panel, paper, and canvas. The strong wooden surface provides a sense of support that compliments the fragility of paper. Though they're unable to stand for a prolonged time, Chloé still dances with the figures in these works. Similar to Leon Golub’s process of painting, they build layers on the surfaces and pull them apart afterwards.

Currently they are working with sound and text while navigating accommodations with certain chronic illnesses. Making art through these experiences adds moments of rawness and questions involving the spaces we hold and share. Chloé Beltran brings forward a profound level of honesty that invites observers to have a conversation with each piece and reevaluate experiences with their own.
